Earlier this week, Toronto witnessed a tragic death - tragic in its senselessness and also in the literary sense. Two men who didn't know each other, one an extremely high-powered lawyer/politician and the other a bicycle courier struggling with alcoholism, both fathers of young children, got into an argument on the roadway. The lawyer driving with his wife in a Saab convertible after celebrating their 12th anniversary, and the courier riding his bike after visiting his girlfriend earlier that evening. The courier held onto the car while the lawyer drove away finally smashing the courier against the mailbox in this photo. Rage on both sides that went way too far. But while the lawyer is out on bail and faces charges that may amount to years in prison, the courier is dead.
The site of Darcy Alan Sheppard's death has become a memorial, and the centre of several rallies this week.
