Margret [1/4] At First SightPosted by Damon Schreiber (Toronto, Canada) on 11 July 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio. [Lansdowne & Bloor, Toronto] Who Margret is, and why her face is on a poster is a mystery I cannot solve. Anyone? Yesterday, I answered a sympathetic comment from Lucca's Cafe about my stolen bicycle with a link to a Chinese fable that is somehow related. I found a slightly different retelling of this story which I have edited and will post below: Long ago, near the frontier lived an old man. One day he found his horse missing. It was said that the horse was seen running outside the border of the country. The neighbours came to comfort him for the unfortunate loss. But the old man was unexpectedly calm and said, "It doesn't matter; it may not be a bad event. On the contrary, I think it could be a good one." One night the old man heard the sound of horses and got up to look. To his surprise, he saw another beautiful horse as well as his own. It was clear that his horse had brought a companion home. Hearing the news, the neighbours all came to congratulate him on his good luck. At their greetings, however, the old man was very calm and thoughtful. He mused, "It is true that I got a new horse for nothing, but it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. It may not be so fortunate." He was soon proved right. The old man's son was very fond of the new horse, and one day, when he was riding it, he was thrown down with a terrible injury in his left leg. After that, he was never able to walk without a cane. "Nothing serious," the old man said, "perhaps it is all to the good." A year later, many of the youth in the area were recruited to fight in a war, and most of them were killed. The son of the old man was absolved from the obligation because his disability, and so he escaped death. So you see, having my bicycle stolen may well have saved my life.
