We are on strikePosted by Damon Schreiber (Toronto, Canada) on 25 June 2009 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio. No, really, we're on strike. I've never been on a strike before, never walked a picket line. It's an interesting experience to say the least. The mood in the city seems to be generally against the strike, because people aren't getting the services they paid for with their taxes, and to a certain extent, because misery loves company: The economy is bad so how dare anyone make more than minimum wage and not be satisfied with whatever they're offered. Well, fair enough. Everyone's entitled to his or her own opinion. But remember that the members of a union are just regular people who applied for and were hired for jobs they wanted to do, and those jobs happened to be union positions which means that a contract has to be negotiated every few years. In other words, don't blame your bad opinion of unions on the individual strikers. Also, remember that while we are on strike, we are not getting paid by our employer. The only payment we receive is a nominal amount if we picket. [Spadina & D'Arcy, Toronto]
