There was a terrible fire in downtown Toronto this week which burned down several historic buildings including Duke's bike shop which had been in operations since 1914 and where I worked one summer in 1985.
This photo (which was taken after sunset) shows the remains of Suspect Video which as their website wryly notes is down to one location. It's sad but startling to see the aftermath of this little tragedy. The good thing is that thankfully no one was hurt. I'll try to make it back for more photos tomorrow if possible.

I'm so sorry, truly, about the store, but Good Heavens, this is a gorgeous photo of the aftermath...really impressive!

It was a horrible fire, the grain captures the tragedy. I grew up in Toronto so I enjoy your work especially in areas which I know and grew up in.

Amazing... had a look at their website, they seem like a pretty cool bunch of guys... I wonder what rare items they lost?

Nice creepy feel to this.

That is sad, especially since you had personal links to the site. Very nice (and stark) photo documenting the wreckage, hopefully it'll be fixed soon enough

Holy shit! I just found this blog. My name is Daniel and I have been the Manager and Head Buyer at the Suspect on Queen w. for the last 8 years (I had worked there for 12-13 years).I am currently attempting to rebuild the collection and re-open a new store asap. You can follow the progress at http://www.500wattbrain.blogspot.com/

@Daniel: Thanks for your comment, Daniel! I'm with you all the way in your efforts to rebuild. Toronto needs as many independent free-thinking shops like yours as we can get. Keep up the fight and don't smoke in bed :-)
