Sakamoto/Schreiber - Toronto 1977-2007 series starts here.
Continued from yesterday
So with the new camera in hand, I resurrected the project and set out to retake those photos. Luckily most of the construction from 2004 was completed and the city didn't look too bad this year. Also 2007 seemed like an apt year to tackle it since it was almost exactly 30 years since the original photos were taken.
I set out to take a few shots but came back rather disappointed with the results (this was to become a pattern as trial and error evolved into something like a method). It turns out that reverse-engineering someone else's photos is trickier than it looks. It was somewhere around this point that I made one last attempt to try reconnecting with Mr. Sakamoto. Using all my Google skills, I finally hit upon the winning combination of kewords 'Shige', 'Toronto', and 'Yokohama'. Amazingly, 'Shige's wallpaper images' was the first of 250 pages found by Google. I was so happy, let me tell you! I went through the site and even found a few more photos that I hadn't noticed last time. And I sent an email, and we're (obviously) back in touch, and all is good. One of the side-benefits of reconnecting was confirming a few details to help recompose these photos: they were indeed taken with a 28mm lens (and an Olympus OM-2), and Sakamoto-san is about 2 cm taller than me.
Tomorrow: something like a method.
Note: While the scene looks almost identical, three years ago, the building across the street was undergoing some major renovations so the scene was nothing like it appears here - it was messy. And I'm gratified that the 'Hospital Quiet' sign is still there after all these years. It's the little bits of continuity like that which make this so much fun.
Also, this is one of the images where I came closest to duplicating the exact view. I could imagine I had found the exact spot on the sidewalk where Sakamoto-san had taken his photo 30 years ago. It's fun when things work out like that (and frustrating when they don't).

What a great job on this. I love the trolley and the quiet sign is a nice touch.

Excellent job in this photo, loved that the quiet sign is still there!

Now this is extra special. Totally concurr with you re the continuity of the hospital sign, but it's the street car that really makes this for me. It's in almost exactly the same position in both images. Would love to know how long you were rooted to that spot, and how many pics you took to get this. Whatever it was, it was well worth the effort.
Hats off to you for this series, Damon, and for this image in particular.

Loving this series every day ... I can't believe you got the TTC in the same spot ... wow. And when you said "Sakamoto-san is about 2 cm taller than me" it made me realize the level of detail you've strived for in this series. Bravo.

Wonderful series, Damon! I love to see how everything has changed in a couple of years. And I'm happy to see that there are more trees than before, and not the other way round. Same light, same place, same angle – different tram same place. Love it!

Congratulations again Damon. I have been so impressed by your patience and attention to detail in duplicating the positions in this series, but like Aaron, I am blown away that you even thought about waiting for the tram. I just keep thinking what a thrill this must have been and continues to be for Shige Sakamoto. To see him commenting on your work touches me.

Great job and research!

I'm very happy to see that these two shots are almost exactly the same except the tree-lined side walk and ivy covered wall . Especially ,It's incredible that the old telephone pole and the old signboard of QUIET are still there as if it seems to have been forgotten the existence . The tall building in the background was "Hydro place" that was one of the sponsoring bodies of the conference that I attended. I used Google Earth to find "hydro place" by inputting the street names and found the beautiful building in 3D , but couldn't find its name.

@Shige Sakamoto: I feel the same way about the QUIET sign. Looks as though it's been forgotten about. I don't think there actually is a hospital directly facing the street here any more, although there are a couple of hospitals nearby.
I didn't know for sure what the official name of the building was anymore. I think most people here call it the "Ontario Hydro Building", but Ontario Hydro became Hydro One and Ontario Power Generation a few years ago. Finally I found on Wikipedia that the building is now called the "Ontario Power Building". It was only two years old when you visited, but it looks almost exactly the same now. Still quite modern-looking, but there are now many reflective buildings around town. It must have been especially startling in 1977.
In the most positive sense possible with this series in mind...words fail me. I am trying to work out exactly how long it took you you to put this together. The legwork, time on the internet. Unbelievable. It's Sunday. So I have seen 'Queen's Park Looking South'. Decided to comment on this one though...because something caught my eye...is that your own little pictorial autograph in the picture...namely 'The Beast'? Apologies if I am wrong...but it kind of looks familiar? Again a truly wonderful idea, that has been brilliantly executed.

@maivju:z: Thanks so much, sHadow! No, you're absolutely correct. That is indeed the very same Beast! It's been a big help with this project, and it tried to get in as many of the photos as it could.
