It was so cold... (1 of 2)Posted by Damon Schreiber (Toronto, Canada) on 26 January 2007 in People & Portrait and Portfolio. Coldest day so far yesterday. -14C during the day which isn't all that cold, but with the windchill... Anyway, I don't mind the cold; I'm still just tickled that we finally got winter. Hi-Res version here. [Alness 113 Bus, Toronto]

Evelyn from New Milford, United StatesIt does look cold! I thought that before I even saw your caption. Great capture of a moment--it speaks for itself without words. 26 Jan 2007 5:18am @Evelyn: Thanks, Evelyn! Cold can be managed as long as people dress for it. Maoya (Raccoony is Clem) from Rolle, SwitzerlandI sense that theses are going to be sneaky ones... It finally got cold here to, and finally decided to snow in Rolle on wed, but by the end of the day all the kids dressed up in their snow suites were sledding on mudd! 26 Jan 2007 6:30am @Maoya (Raccoony is Clem): Thanks, Maoya! And thanks for sorting out who is who in Rolle! Mud-sledding... not good. Still from Valence, FranceOften images and portraits in the bus or the subway tells stories...Just like this one . Fine treatment of the B&W! 26 Jan 2007 10:05am @Still: Thanks, Still! Glad you liked it. Francis from Hong KongVery beautiful contrast in black and white and the image really speaks for itself 26 Jan 2007 10:28am @Francis: Thank you, Francis! Duncan Galbraith from kyoto, Japanlove the starkness of the window, as though outside theres snow, and only snow, with the people huddled inside seeking shelter/respite. Which I guess they are. Fine take. fine conversion. 26 Jan 2007 10:45am @Duncan Galbraith: Thanks, Duncan! Mostly, I think they're seeking transportation. Sylvia from Milano, ItalyReally like this, the black and white makes it, with stark lines---color would have been way less powerful. I agree, great 'story' captured in image. 26 Jan 2007 11:40am @Sylvia: Thanks, Sylvia! I almost went with colour - the middle aged woman's coat was a lovely shade of purple... @Bahare: Thanks, Bahare! Angry Buddha from United StatesI know how she feels, the wind chill here today is going to be zero. Another great shot. 26 Jan 2007 1:38pm @Angry Buddha: I take it that's zero degrees Fahrenheit. Otherwise...not so cold. Thanks, Sean! Jerry from Tampa, United Statesthe image tells the story of the cold - congrats 26 Jan 2007 10:16pm @Jerry: Thanks, Jerry! rumbarber from Berlin, Germanygood advertisement for the durability iPods too (unless my keen eye has failed me). 26 Jan 2007 10:45pm @rumbarber: I think you're right! Though on the other hand, she might just be trying to get it to work. Thanks, Rumbarber! Stu from Kyoto, Japan-14?! Rather you than me Damon! Another great candid shot. The old lady's expression is superb - looks like she's recoiling from something just off the frame. Must be her stop next! 26 Jan 2007 11:56pm @Stu: Och, that's nothing, mate! Winter's just getting started here. Thanks, Stu! Kelvin Chan from New York City, United Statesa 1x1 crop would be more pleasing the the eye here as it gets rid of the pole on the left. your processing is a bit extreme in that the bright areas got too overblown and the dark areas got completely shaded in. As a result there are only details in the midrange, and they are surrounded by blotches of over and underexposed areas. I'd like to see more details in the hair on the right woman and in the gloves of the center woman. It captures the coldness well, but it can do better with more fine tuning. 29 Jan 2007 3:40am @Kelvin Chan: Thanks for the critiques, Kelvin! Hope you're recovering from your illness. I agree with some of your points... overall, I didn't think it was that strong a photo - not one of my best by any means. I'll give you the cropping advice. I can't remember exactly why I cropped it as I did - doesn't look like it came out of the camera like that. Excluding the third woman and the pole changes it quite a bit - I'm not sure if I like it better, but I agree the left part looks kind of cluttered. As to the processing and the high-contrast look... I like it and I think it works okay, and it was obviously done on purpose, but you're probably right that it could have been done better. Thanks again. I do enjoy rethinking the process. M.E. from Encino, United Statesthey are almost saying - "i couldn't care less about anyone, it's very cold today..." 3 Feb 2007 3:48pm @M.E.: Indeed! Thanks, ME! |
