College Fruit and FlowerPosted by Damon Schreiber (Toronto, Canada) on 8 December 2006 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio. To balance out the butcher shop series from a few weeks ago, I'm adding a short series on local fruit shops to get us through the weekend. This was taken last Sunday at sunrise. And by the way, the Nissan forklift in the foreground is what they use to lift the crates of cabbages, etc. [College & Beatrice, Toronto]

Aaron Schmidt from Auckland, New ZealandGreat shot. It seems like image rotation has left little white silvers in the corners though. 8 Dec 2006 5:23am @Aaron Schmidt: Aaaargh!!! Thank you so much for noticing that, Aaron. Fixing... MnX from PARIS, FranceI love the lighting effect. It's just like when the sun shows after a big rain! 8 Dec 2006 9:01am @MnX: Thanks, Cyrille! I may have enhanced it a bit, but you know when you come across a scene that looks dramatic because of the lighting, you just have to share that feeling with others. wanganeges from concord, ma, United Statesthis is a great comp with wonderful lighting. great details! 8 Dec 2006 10:49am @wanganeges: Thank you so much, Wanganeges! Your image today was truly memorable. Jason Kravitz from Brussels, BelgiumBrilliant light 8 Dec 2006 10:51am @Jason Kravitz: Go for it, Jason! I wanna see some of that delicious Belgian fruit! Thanks, and you have a good one too. Duncan Galbraith from kyoto, JapanNice location shot Damon, you're giving us an overview I see, will you be getting stuck in, among the apples and pears though mate? I must say I look forward to your next installment with less caution than I did when you were frequenting butchers. Not that it wasnt a crackin series but I kept expecting some kind of grisly 'dont look now' image. Not much chance of anything grisly in a fruit shop surely... 8 Dec 2006 11:01am @Duncan Galbraith: No, I wouldn't worry about the fruit shops - nothing shocking there, although because of that, I'm not too interested in the fruit per sé. I'll get a bit closer tomorrow, and closer still the day after, but really, it's the settings and the lighting more than the fruit. Ok, I admit this series is a touch half-hearted, but just wait till next week :-) By the way, I'll have to try that laundromat otaku trick - or a variation - some time. If you can convince people that you are just a harmless lunatic with a camera, I guess they don't mind what you do with it. Lunacy is getting great results for you, so keep at it. Maoya from Rolle, Switzerlando sweetness! The blue against the brown really struck me. 8 Dec 2006 2:02pm @Maoya: Ah, tangerines... Almost that season I reckon. I'll eat tangerines (or clementines, or mandarins) when the snow is on the ground, and there's nothing to do but sit sit sit. Thanks for your kind words! @Martine Lapointe: Thank you, Martine! Ta lichen d'aujourdhui eté aussi belle. @badala: Obrigado, Badala! @M.E.: Thanks, M.E. Moral of the story: always carry your camera! Mammoth in Chief from Naperville, United StatesVery nice. I like it the effect when the sky is cloudy and black, there's still sunlight off the buildings. You caught that effect very good. I like it. 8 Dec 2006 9:55pm @Mammoth in Chief: Thanks, Mammoth! Light is the ultimate subject. Saurabh from Austin, United Statesnice and refreshing, feel like being there in the sun... 8 Dec 2006 11:50pm @Saurabh: It's even better with a box of fresh pastries in your hand. Thanks, Saurabh! Stu from Kyoto, Japanlove your street shots damon. real slice of life stuff. great colours in the bldg and a brooding sky behind. nice job mate. 9 Dec 2006 12:07am @Stu: Many thanks, Stu! Love to photograph the old stomping grounds. Kelvin Chan from New York City, United StatesThe colors are a weeeee bit too saturated for me, and the fruit stand doesn't really stands out because of the nissan forklift thing in the corner. But enough with the anal bitching. The dog on the left is a very nice touch, and the perspective of seeing two streets is wonderful. The lighting is as good as can be. I have some fruit stand pictures that I took yesterday, they're crappy I'll try to salvage them. 9 Dec 2006 4:53am @Kelvin Chan: Thanks for your perceptive comments. Yes, there were decisions to be made in presenting this photo. I like the colours here myself, but I can understand you point of view. I tried cropping out the forklift, but without the side of the building the picture wasn't nearly as nice to my eyes. Glad you liked the dog. It was being walked on a leash, but I only got half the person in the frame, so I took out the half person and left the dog. Thanks so much for your comments, Kelvin; you're very perceptive, both in your critiques and in your photos. tyler sloane from kitchener, CanadaGreat photo, i like how the photo shows both sides of the buildings and all that dwells around it! 11 Dec 2006 12:10pm @tyler sloane: Thanks, Tyler! A big shout out to KW! H.O from Victoria, CanadaVery nice image Damon. I like this composition and colors. 12 Dec 2006 7:58am @H.O: Domo arigatou! |
